The history of North West Leicestershire

This area contains diverse communities like the market town Ashby-de-la-Zouch and the centre of Leicestershire's mining industry Coalville. The District Council maintain an extensive website which has a variety of resources for residents and visitors to the area.

The area was the subject of the Mantle Oral History project which is now held in the East Midlands Oral History Archive.

Currently working in the area is the LANDshapes a Heritage Lottery Funded project based in the National Forest. The LANDshapes oral history collection can be found on the EMOHA site.

• Ashby de la Zouch Museum
• The history of Moira Furnace can be found on Wikipedia.
• The village of Diseworth has a nice history section.
• Newton Burgoland is an EMOHA exhibition about life in a small village in NW Leics.
• Swannington Heritage Trust website is an excellent look at a local village associated with both coal and the railways.
• The Friends of Thringston have information about the Thringston area.
• Willesley Wood is a good website by Ian Retson which looks at transport history, mining history, and recent history in the Willesley Wood area (which is near Donisthorpe and Measham). Lots of photos and information about other local woods.
