The Primary Teacher as Scientist Project

Children in primary schools are nowadays expected to carry out open-ended science investigations.  Much of this work is successful, with pupils being motivated and producing work of real worth.  All too often, though, these investigations become routine and fail to capture the essence of what it is to do science and to be a scientist.

The booklet grew out of a project funded by The Gatsby Charitable Foundation.

The booklet

  • Describes how one hundred primary teachers were helped to carry out pieces of scientific research for themselves.
  • The teachers were enabled to have first-hand understanding of what is involved in scientific research.
  • It provides accounts of some of the pieces of work produced by the teachers.
  • The effect of the project on the teachers is examined.
  • Suggestions for the adaptation of the project for work with students in initial teacher training or with other qualified teachers are made.
