December 2000

No 215

As part of its expanding international activities, the Centre for Labour Market Studies (CLMS) at the University of Leicester in the UK has established official links with the Singapore Government's Productivity and Standards Board.

After many years of informal collaboration between the two groups, the Singapore Productivity and Standards Board has proposed official collaboration with the Leicester Centre in the following areas:

  • Collaboration on workforce development research projects - many of which are used to inform national policies on skills development;
  • Co-ordination of seminars/conferences to share the expertise of the two organisations;
  • The Productivity and Standards Board will officially sponsor the 'Learning Corner' on the CLMS Website ;
  • Staff attachments to CLMS for training purposes.
  • Professor David Ashton, from CLMS, commented: "This represents an important step in our aim to make the Centre for Labour Market Studies the leading international resource centre in the field human resource development".

    Professor David Ashton and Mr Johnny Sung , Director of the Centre for Labour Market Studies, finalised the agreement in Singapore in November following the Government's "People Excellence 2000" conference at which Professor Ashton provided the keynote address.

    Sponsorship of the CLMS web-site < http://www.clms.le.ac.uk/>, widely regarded in international circles as the leading 'learning' site for Human Resource Development, took effect immediately after the signing of the agreement. Collaboration on seminars will start in September 2001 with a joint seminar in Singapore to share the findings of the CLMS International Survey of Training and Development Activities.
