A Leicester University arts centre is opening its doors to the public for a summer display of art, music and dance.
The Richard Attenborough Centre for Disability and the Arts, Lancaster Road, Leicester, is holding an Open Day on Thursday 24 June. Lunches and refreshments are on sale and the event is open to everyone.
Two's Company starts the ball rolling at 12.45 pm, with Swingle Singer Wendy Nieper and Stephen Watkins, piano, followed at 2.30 pm by Kinetic One, a performance of contemporary dance and club music by Fervent De Facto. An exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculpture by students of the Centre is on display throughout the afternoon until 6 pm. For those unable to attend on 24 June, the art exhibition will remain open to the public until 14 July.
Alan Caine, Associate Director of the Richard Attenborough Centre said : "The exhibition day comes at the end of a very exciting year for us, with a huge variety of art classes that have attracted a wonderful range of students."
Formally opened by the late Princess of Wales in May 1997, the Richard Attenborough Centre for Disability and the Arts is open to everybody, but has a special focus on people with disabilities and other members of the public who may have found access to arts education difficult. Its work has evolved from courses run by the University's Department of Adult Education.
Sculpture workshops specifically designed for visually impaired people, formed the beginnings of the project in 1982. From these grew the current programmes of classes, workshops, training seminars, research projects and exhibitions, not only in sculpture and art, but also music, dance, drama and creative writing.
