Hotlines at the Ready at the University of Leicester

July 2002
No 165

Hotlines are to be set up in the University of Leicester to meet the demand for places in one of the UK’s top 20 universities.

The University is preparing for this month’s Clearing round – the period when A level students get their results and seek available spaces at university.

Leicester is a particular favourite – last year the University received over 15,000 applications and had a record recruitment of well over 2,500 undergraduates, of which 10% came through Clearing.

The new hotline number is 0116 223 1069. The hotlines will be operational from August 15- August 21 from 8am to 5pm or later, plus 9am-4pm on Saturday August 17 and 9.30am to 4pm on Sunday August 18.

Vacancies are also being listed on the University of Leicester website:

There is also a hotlink from the UCAS website –

Campus tours are available every week day at 12 noon starting from the reception of the Fielding Johnson Building - there is no need to book. A Clearing Information Day, on Saturday 17 August, will give students the chance to meet admissions tutors as well as tour the campus and see the residences. There will also be a campus tour at noon on Sunday August 18 from the front of the Fielding Johnson Building.

Louise Burton, Admissions Director for the University of Leicester, said: “The University of Leicester receives applications from high calibre students and we are looking forward to a buoyant Clearing period.

"We take about 10% of our students through Clearing and to meet the demand for places, we are running special hotlines, a dedicated website as well as a Clearing Information Day giving every applicant a chance to speak to admission tutors and view the excellent academic and student facilities on offer. Students who apply for accommodation by 1 September will be guaranteed a place in a University-managed residence.

“While a wide range of degree programmes will be available through Clearing, some, due to the high demand, will only be available for a short period of time. Up to date Clearing vacancy information with points scores and grades required can be found on our website. Our tutors have a great deal of expertise and will be able to offer specialist advice to applicants.

“Our degrees are highly valued by employers and the University has received a total of 18 awards of Excellence for its teaching by external assessors. The University has also attained its best ever scores in the Research Assessment Exercise with 84% of staff deemed to be conducting research of national or international calibre.”
