July 2003

Conference also marks recognition for teaching excellence

Four University of Leicester academics are winners of the first Teaching Awards at the University.

The University, which has been rated Excellent for its teaching quality by every single external assessment since 1998, has a total of 18 subject areas that are rated top-notch for teaching.

The four who received their awards on Monday, July 7 are:

    Heather Crick - Pre-Clinical Sciences
    Emma Parker - English
    Nick Everett - English
    Chris Willmott - Biochemistry

At the Awards conference, staff and students also addressed the issue: How Do Freshers Fare?

Jane Wellens, Teaching Enhancement Officer, said: "This is the 2nd Annual University conference to support initiatives in Learning and Teaching.

"Last year's successful event focused on Diversity, Equal Opportunities and the Curriculum. This year's theme of Enhancing the First Year Experience considered students' first year of higher education and explore ways in which their learning can be supported and enhanced during this critical period, and has come about in response to the large numbers of different activities and range of interest across the institution.

"As well as a large number of internal delegates from across all disciplines, we are delighted that participants from local 6th form and FE colleges were able to join us. This provided a valuable opportunity for teachers and lecturers from either side of the School/HE interface to share their experiences, and discuss how students can be helped to make the transition from secondary to tertiary education.

"The day also showcased examples of good practice and innovative teaching methods from within the university and beyond and provide the chance for staff to hear students' reflections of their first year experience at Leicester. The conference programme was designed to generate inspiration and ideas for all participants and feed into induction activities and courses for students starting in the next academic year."
