Awards ceremony recognises best business employment practices

PLEASE NOTE THERE IS AN EMBARGO ON ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS OF THE BUSINESS AWARDS UNTIL 1.00PM ON MONDAY JUNE 19. PHOTOCALL DETAILS BELOW.

Businesses in Leicestershire that have made an exemplary effort in providing employment opportunities for students are to be honoured at a special awards ceremony at the University of Leicester.

The Employer Awards Scheme was launched by the University of Leicester Students’ Union in February, building on the work of its Student Employment Centre. The Award Scheme judged employers on the opportunities they offer based on an understanding of present and future student needs.

The judging panel, which includes representatives from Everards Brewery, Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce, Leicester City Council and the Leicester Mercury, as well as the University and Students’ Union, assessed the duties students are given, the training and induction procedures and the overall benefits gained by both parties.

Now winners in three categories will be announced at a luncheon on Monday June 19 and will receive their awards and trophies before representatives of local businesses, city organisations and students.

Winners will be announced in the Small employer, Medium business and Large business categories. Veronica Lees, manager of the Student Employment Centre, said: “We had a wide selection of firms and a very high standard of entry that provided a real challenge for the judges.

“This scheme acknowledges companies who recognise the many advantages of employing students and reward those who provide a meaningful job which will enhance the individual’s transferable skills.

“We aim to provide our students with a wide range of employment opportunities which reflect their practical work based skills. The Employer Award Scheme provides us with an ideal opportunity to raise our profile and develop stronger links with local businesses to achieve this goal.”

Richard Everard, Chairman of Everards Brewery Ltd, who are sponsors for the awards, said: “As a major local employer for over 150 years, Everards Brewery Ltd. welcomes the opportunity to support the activities of the University of Leicester Student Employment Centre. We are particularly pleased to act as the sponsor for their inaugural Employer Award Scheme during the year 2000. We hope that this will play a significant part, helping to raise awareness of the very worthwhile activities of the SEC, for both employers and students.”
