December 2001

No 193

The first two graduates resulting from a link between the University of Leicester (UK) and the Lebanese American University (LAU) in Beirut are celebrating their success.

Rima Bahous, Assistant Professor at LAU, and Roseanne Khalef have both obtained a Doctorate in Education (EdD) from the University of Leicester, having followed a programme devised by Leicester and supported by LAU since1991.

Under this agreement lecturers from the University of Leicester visit Lebanon twice a year for an intensive programme of tutorials and teaching at LAU.

Dr Rima Bahous and Dr Roseanne Khalef are the first among tens of students from a number of education institutions in the Lebanon who have registered on the programme.

As part of the agreement, LAU supports the programme by the use of resources including its library, lecture theatres, tutorial rooms and accommodation for the visiting lecturers.

At the graduation ceremony held in the Gulbenkian Hall of the Lebanese American University (Beirut Campus) on 10 November 2001 the degrees were confirmed by the University of Leicester Dean of the School of Education, Professor Ken Fogelman, in the presence of members of the School of Education and faculty members from LAU and other Lebanese universities. The Vice-President for Academic Affairs at LAU, Dr Nabil Haidar, and the Dean of the School of Social Science at LAU who co-ordinates LAU’s own Education courses and hosts that offered by the University of Leicester, Dr Hadia Harb, also attended.

Dr Hugh Busher, Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Leicester, said: “We are very pleased with the way our Doctorate of Education Programme has developed in the Lebanon, with the help and support of colleagues at LAU and the hard work of tutors in the School of Education at Leicester University. Through this partnership we look forward to more graduates in the near future and the further development of joint research projects in Education.”.
