Scintillating score for University of Leicester

Varsity Match report - the men's match

With the spoils even going into the third annual Varsity match at Welford Road, both teams had everything to play for. After a successful season in which the University of Leicester team had gained promotion, victory was the only thing they were thinking of.

Despite the poor weather, a large and energetic crowd was there to cheer the teams on. The University of Leicester side struck first with a penalty by fly-half Jack Lewis, and this set the mood for the evening, with the Leicester pack working hard and dominating De Montfort at both the line-out and scrum.

This dominance set the platform for the backs to work their moves, but it wasn’t until centre Ali Fox charged down a clearance by DMU, that Leicester crossed De Montfort’s line; the deflected kick bouncing kindly, allowing him to score an easy try under the posts.  Things soon turned sour for Fox when he was sin-binned for a 'technical error' after the ageing De Montfort number 8 had cynically tackled Oli Booth in mid air.

By half time Leicester were leading 16-0, a score that flattered De Montfort, who had hardly touched the ball in the first half.

Leicester began the second half in much the same way as they finished the first, but despite several surges deep into De Montfort territory, they could not add to their score. It wasn’t until mid-way through the second half that DMU registered their solitary score of the game, through a penalty they were fortunate to be awarded. However, any hopes of a revival De Montfort had were swiftly dashed, as Leicester winger Adam Davies took an interception deep in his own half, evaded several De Montfort players and crossed the line for a scintillating score. Lewis added the extra points to complete the rout.
