Staff members from Student Development at the University of Leicester will be swapping their pens for shovels to spend the day at All Saints Primary School in Wigston on Wednesday 30th June 2010 to give the school a well deserved garden make-over.

The Student Development team have been planning the garden make-over, in partnership with Leicestershire Cares, for over 3 months and the big day is now just around the corner. Staff have their spades, trowels and wheelbarrows at the ready to embark on a mission to transform a large section of the school playing field into a woodland walkway, science study and reflection area.

The Volunteering Team from Student Development have been co-ordinating the project and have been liaising with the school and Leicestershire Cares on a regular basis to ensure the garden satisfies the needs of the children. Leicestershire Cares is a membership organisation of key employers in Leicester and Leicestershire, dedicated to corporate responsibility by bringing businesses and the community together for the benefit of both.

Monica Kimche, Director of Leicestershire Cares said, “The enjoyment and educational impacts would be immediate and would be a tremendous boost to the whole school”.

On the day, Student Development will be working in small teams on different projects, which will include, creating a small garden at one end of the foundation years play ground with raised beds that are suitable for young children to grow plants and vegetables and transforming part of the school playing field into a quiet reflective garden walk and area for the whole school community. This will involve putting in a stepping stone path, a bark pathway through the trees, a wooden platform, log seating area, animal homes and lots of wildflowers and other plants.

The aim of this garden makeover is to encourage children to enjoy the natural world and learn where food comes from as well as for practical science study. Many of the children at All Saints Primary School live in flats and do not have a garden to enjoy. This fantastic project will not only enable the children to explore their outdoor surroundings but learn how important our natural environment is in a fun and educational way.

The team would also like to say a big thank you to Builders merchants Travis Perkins who will be generously donating a range of material and will be sending a couple of their own employees with diggers to prepare the school field prior to the big day.
