1994 Group welcomes support for universities in budget

Issued on 25 March 2010

Responding to today’s budget Professor Paul Wellings, Chair of the 1994 Group and Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University said:

“Our universities are driving economic growth and meeting the most pressing challenges facing our society. We welcome the support for universities in today’s budget and eagerly await further details.”

“Today’s budget indicates that the Government has listened to the serious concerns that we raised in recent months and responded by providing a £270 million Modernisation Fund to support universities in through these challenging times. The new funding for 20,000 additional undergraduate places will allow universities to go some way towards meeting the demand for this autumn. For our universities offer the highest quality provision, all expansion must be fully funded for both teaching and student support.”

“We welcome the Government’s support for exploiting universities’ commercial potential. The work to develop a collaborative vehicle to commercialise intellectual property from university research to help access finance from private sector investors is a positive development. This initiative coupled with the new University Enterprise Capital Fund and further support for enterprise education will support our universities to further increase their economic impact.”

“What our universities need is a clear long-term strategy backed up by a stable and sustainable funded environment to enable them to deliver maximum benefit to our economy and society. They are a critical part of the growth agenda for the UK. We need to make sure that efficiencies in the sector do not erode our capacity to act as a key economic driver.”
