Remorseful at having refused to baptise a dying child, Morrell goes into voluntary exile, taking ship for England. In his haste he took with him, and lost overboard, the key to a reliquary. As the painting shows, the key was swallowed by a fish. In England he seeks employment that will help him atone for his sin (Scene 3).
