St Leonard's was one of three Bristol gate chapels which commemorated 'forest' saints and therefore were appropriate places to receive the invocation of travellers who were setting out into, or who had just arrived from the well-wooded hinterland of Bristol, particularly Kingswood north of the Avon. The others were Giles and John the Baptist. Leonard reputedly helped the wife of the Merovingian king Clovis to give birth in the forest and was rewarded with land for a monastery.
