Extended Schools

For children and young people to reach their full potential they need a positive approach to learning and to school. Having opportunities before and after school helps to do this.

Award Schemes from the British Science Association

As part of the extended school day, the British Science Association organises nationally-recognised award schemes that provide quality science investigations for both primary and secondary pupils.

At primary level, the First and Young Investigators which currently serviced around 30,000 children a year. From September 2007, these schemes were replaced by CREST « Investigators (CREativity in Science and Technology). The engaging activities, that are suitable for both gifted and less able children, begin with a contextual problem in an appealing format which is followed by a challenge. Children are encouraged to discuss, develop and test their own ideas within the three progressively challenging levels.

At secondary level, the CREST Awards provide young people with the opportunity to explore the real nature of science and technology by doing their own creative problem solving through mini research projects. CREST is the only UK-wide, fully accredited science enrichment scheme. At higher levels, students are linked with mentors in industry or higher education who help them develop and carry out their project work.

CREST Awards are delivered across the UK by STEMPOINTs.
