Working with Scientists

The Science Learning Centre East Midlands supports teachers in enhancing their professional skills by learning more about contemporary scientific ideas and gaining experience of modern scientific techniques.

Dr Jonny Woodward ran a research group concerned with the effects of magnetic fields on chemical and biological systems, and was also the Schools Liaison Officer for the Department of Chemistry at the University of Leicester and heavily involved in outreach work across a range of age groups.

Jonny WoodwardI believe that there has been a gradual realisation by scientists in recent years that it is our responsibility to promote the significance, relevance and beauty of our disciplines, particularly to the potential scientists of the future. I think there is also now a growing realisation that inspiring a teacher can have a far more significant and long-lasting effect than inspiring an individual student.

It has been a pleasure working with the Science Learning Centre on a personal level. The staff are friendly, organised and professional and really allow academic staff to concentrate on the bit that they are good at – the ideas and delivery. The Centre adds the polish and produces a wonderful total package that I feel teachers cannot fail to find rewarding.

Working with Scientists

We have worked closely with scientists in our partner institutions to provide courses for teachers that are both relevant and contemporary.
