Working with Scientists

The Science Learning Centre East Midlands supports teachers in enhancing their professional skills by learning more about contemporary scientific ideas and gaining experience of modern scientific techniques.

Professor Martin Barstow was Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and is now Head of the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Leicester.

Martin BarstowThere is a lot of good evidence that the Space and Astronomy topics in the curriculum engage the interest of school students more than almost any other. So in our departmental outreach programme we have invested a lot of effort in using our research to create activities that can be used in the classroom to add excitement to normal lessons.

Teachers and students tell us that our teaching aids are really useful, but we have very limited resources for providing advice and support for teachers who want to use them. We have found that the Science Learning Centre is a wonderful opportunity for engaging with groups of teachers who would like our help.

Also, having this organisational structure available removes a lot of the administrative burden we would otherwise have in delivering CPD to teachers, freeing us to concentrate on the things that we do best... to help make science in schools exciting for the students.

Working with Scientists

We have worked closely with scientists in our partner institutions to provide courses for teachers that are both relevant and contemporary.
