January 2003
No 5

A young singer acclaimed in the UK and overseas for his dramatic and lyrical gifts as well as his exceptional ability to communicate will be appearing at the University of Leicester Richard Attenborough Centre on Saturday, February 8, 2003.

In the second concert in a series celebrating A New Musical Generation at the RAC, the Swedish baritone Håkan Vramsmo, who trained in Sweden, Holland, France and Germany and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, will perform songs by Schubert, Mozart, Liszt, Butterworth and Haydn Wood.

He will be followed on Saturday, March 15, 2003 by Elizabeth Couling (oboe), concerto finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2000; and on Thursday 22 May 2003 by Alison Balsom (trumpet), brass finalist of the BBC Young Musician of the Year 1998 and prizewinner at the Maurice André International Competition, Paris.

Håkan Vramsmo has given recitals in the UK, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Germany, Lisbon, Tel Aviv and Sweden. He was a prizewinner at the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition in 1999 and the Stuttgart International Lieder Competition in 2001, the same year he sang the role of Robert Easton in Vaughan Williams’ A Serenade to Music at the opening night of the Proms.

A versatile performer, his repertoire ranges from Gregorian Chant to Renaissance and Baroque music as well as standard oratorio roles.

Speaking of the series of recitals which will feature young stars of the music world over the next three years, Organising Tutor for Music at the Richard Attenborough Centre Philip Herbert said: “Håkan Vramsmo enjoys communicating through song in the broadest sense of the word, and this recital promises to be memorable, as there will be something in his performance to delight all those who are drawn to vocal music.

“Many of these young and gifted artists go on to do great things, including joining the BBC’s New Generation Artists’ scheme, where they are encouraged to work with musicians of similar outlook in playing solo recitals, chamber music, broadcasts and recordings.”

HSBC Commercial Service and Sales Centre will exclusively sponsor four concerts per year for three years under the banner “A New Musical Generation”. Communications Manager Andy Milner said: “High quality people are at the heart of our business, especially here in Leicester where we are one of the largest employers. HSBC’s sponsorship of concerts at the Richard Attenborough Centre will be an ideal way for the bank to put back into the community locally while enjoying an ongoing association with quality and talent.”

Håkan Vramsmo’s recital will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2003 at 7.30 pm at the University of Leicester Richard Attenborough Centre, Lancaster Road, Leicester.

Tickets cost £10, £9 (retired) and £7.50 (concession), and group booking discounts are available. Further details are available from the Centre, telephone 0116 252 2455, facsimile 0116 252 5165, email
