PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: THURSDAY 3 JULY, 12.45PM, UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTERíS RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH CENTRE

On Thursday 3 July children from Western Park School and Birkett School in Leicester will be giving a one-off performance of music they have created as part of Weaving with Sound, a project initiated by the University of Leicester Richard Attenborough Centre and carried out by Sambawamba, a Nottingham based arts organisation.

The small group of children taking part in Weaving with Sound have a range of disabilities, but using modern technology alongside traditional instruments, they have written their own song and created several pieces of music.

Sambawamba's Mat Anderson has been working with the children since May, helping them to develop their musical abilities. Under his guidance they have been able to experiment and discover how they can make music using percussion instruments, electric guitar, their own voices and soundbeam (This is a fantastic piece of equipment that can be programmed with any sounds you wish. It emits a beam which makes a noise when broken, so is ideal for people with limited movement).  Two professional musicians from ViVA, the orchestra of the East Midlands, have also been involved.  Bass guitarist Pete Wilson and saxophonist Tim Holmes have been working alongside Mat and the children to complement and augment the music they have created.

Weaving with Sound shows how children with disabilities are able to benefit from organisations working in partnership. The University of Leicester, the National Foundation for Youth Music, Leicestershire County Council, Leicester City Council, the Ulverscroft Foundation, Eastern Orchestral Board and Sambawamba have all contributed to the funding of this project.

A rehearsal of the performance will take place from 10 -11 am on 3 July at the University of Leicester Richard Attenborough Centre, Lancaster Road, Leicester.
