University to Host Conference on Education and Islam

February 2003
No 43

The University of Leicester Centre for the History of Religious and Political Pluralism has hosted a national conference looking at how the education system can help young Muslims understand their faith.

The conference, entitled Community Cohesion: Meeting the Needs of Muslim Pupils, mounted in association with the School Development Support Agency (SDSA), took place on Saturday, February 15.

The inspiration behind the conference came from Leicester City Councilís School Development Support Agency, growing out of a collaboration with the University to devise a curriculum more suited to the needs of Muslim pupils.

Interest was so keen, however, that the event opened up to Local Education Authorities with high numbers of Muslim pupils across the country.

Through a series of workshops, witness sessions and discussions the conference examined the following issues:

Speakers included Ted Cantle (Associate Director of the Improvement and Development Agency [IdeA] and Chair of the Community Cohesion Unit), Asaf Hussain (Visiting Fellow, University of Leicester Centre for the History of Religious and Political Pluralism), Mohammed Naguib (General Adviser of the Birmingham Advisory and Support Service), Shaikh Mahmood Rashid (Chairman of the International Sufi Academy in Birmingham), Maurice Coles (Senior Adviser, City of Birmingham LEA and currently Chief Executive of the SDSA), and Robin Richardson (consultant on British Muslims and Islamophobia). Representatives of some 17 LEAs and also of the locally-based Youth Voice, an independent company set up to promote the aims of youths between the age of 18 and 24, also participated.
