University Exhibition of Star Pictures

January 2003

An exhibition of images of the stars of stage and screen which has proved hugely popular in Northampton was formally launched at the University of Leicester on Friday, January 17 and is currently on view.

For more than 15 years photographer Lou Boileau has been taking black and white photographs of famous actors, including the late John Thaw, Alan Bates, Rik Mayall, Richard Briers, Norman Wisdom, Simon Callow and Leslie Phillips. All the pictures were specially commissioned and were not for press or publication.

Recently some of his photographic portraits have been commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery in London, and he was invited to take a personal portrait of the Queen Mother in Northamptonshire.

He trained at the School of Art and Design in Northampton before moving to Italy for a period, working on various photographic projects.   He now works as a freelance photographer.

A book of his work is available from Sue Handley, University of Leicester Institute of Lifelong Learning.

Lou said: “The exhibition and book launch at the University of Leicester Centre in Northampton, was very successful, and I am very pleased that the exhibition has moved to the Charles Wilson Building at the main campus in Leicester. I have also been asked to exhibit at the Aldwych Theatre on the Strand in London in the near future.”

The exhibition has been arranged by the University’s Institute of Lifelong Learning, which regularly hosts exhibitions of art, sculpture and pottery at its centres in Northampton, as well as the Richard Attenborough Centre and Vaughan College at the University. The summer exhibition in the University’s Harold Martin Botanic Garden, Sculpture in the Garden, was a great success.

The display of Lou Boileau’s photographs is the first time an exhibition of this sort has been arranged by the Institute in the Charles Wilson Building, and it is hoped to do more in the future.

The exhibition of his work at the University of Leicester is open to the public between 9.30 am and 4.30 pm, Monday to Friday. It can be seen on the fifth floor of the Charles Wilson building, which is situated at the top of Mayor’s Walk, University Road, Leicester.
