The School of Education at the University of Leicester has gained full marks in the latest assessment of teaching quality from the Quality Assurance Agency the 15th subject area at Leicester with an excellent result.
The School achieved 24 points out of 24 gaining maximum points in each of the six areas assessed as follows:
Curriculum Design Content and Organisation 4
Teaching Learning and Assessment 4
Student Progression and Achievement 4
Student Support and Guidance 4
Learning Resources 4
Quality Management and Enhancement 4
The University of Leicester now has the rare distinction of having 11 successive awards of 22 points or more from the QAA which equates with a mark of excellent. The University was rated as a top 20 UK University in the latest Sunday Times league table and the Financial Times placed Leicester in the top 20 in the country earlier in the year.
Every department assessed at the University since early 1998 has achieved this result adding to a number of Excellents achieved in earlier years.
The School of Education joins Museum Studies, Economics and Psychology as subject areas at Leicester that have achieved the maximum scores. Head of the School of Education, Professor Ken Fogelman said:
We are extremely pleased with the result and, in particular, the positive comments made on the culture of continuous improvement and the team work displayed by all staff teaching and supporting the programmes.
The Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Burgess added: I am delighted that the QAA assessors highlighted excellent teamwork within the School of Education and across all Academic and Administrative Services. This is a splendid result that reflects the quality of the learning experience
The School of Education was formed in 1962 when the Department of Education and the Institute of Education were merged. Since that time, the School has enjoyed an enviable reputation for being in the forefront of educational research and the professional education of teachers.
The School of Education provides programmes of Initial Teacher Training and Continuing Professional Development for all phases of schooling. It offers qualified teachers or lecturers the opportunity to obtain further qualifications by taught courses, distance learning or by research.
The taught higher degree courses attract students from the United Kingdom and abroad, and the professional and cultural diversity enhance both the teaching and social relationships. There are opportunities for higher degree work by distance learning in Educational Management, Applied Linguistics / the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages and Primary Education. The degree of Doctor of Education (Ed D) which combines taught units with supervised research is available with specialisms in Educational Management, Primary Education and Applied Linguistics/TESOL. In addition students may obtain, by research, the degree of M.Ed. and Ph.D.
The School has been extremely successful in attracting and carrying out a wide range of research projects. It has a reputation for being at the forefront of educational research. In recent years the School has been successful in obtaining research funds from such bodies as the Economic and Social Research Council, the Department for Education and Skills, the Leverhulme Trust, the Esmee Fairbairn Trust and other foundations and from industry. Such funding has supported a number of major projects, particularly well known being those on primary education and teacher education.
In addition the School of Education has a number of Centres and Units. The Educational Management Development Unit, the Centre for Citizenship Studies in Education and the SciCentre have international reputations for their work in research and professional development in their areas of specialism.
