Music Heralds Spirit of Christmas

November 2002
No 258

Mince pies, mulled wine and seasonal music will be on the agenda at the University of Leicester on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at 7.30 pm, when the School of Modern Languages presents Music for Christmas 2002 at the Fraser Noble Hall, London Road, Leicester (near University Road Junction).

This highly popular annual event, now approaching its tenth year, attracts students and colleagues past and present and old and young from the city and county.

Under the guidance of Robert Kenny, Director of French Studies at the University, the choir and orchestra present a varied programme of less well-known but delightfully tuneful Christmas music from all over Europe (usually in about seven languages, sung with impeccable diction by the students of Modern Languages), accompanied by an orchestra drawn from students and friends across the city and the University.

Old favourites are also included and there is always audience participation in a popular English carol. The exceptional musical skills of individual members are displayed in instrumental and vocal solos, and this yearís event is joined by members of Soar Valley Community Collegeís lively Music Department.

The interval takes the form of a mini-party with home-made hot spiced wine and mince pies. It also provides a get-together for staff, students and friends from around the city.

Tickets cost £6.00 (£5.00 concessions) including wine and a mince pie, and are available from University of Leicester Studentsí Union Travel, telephone 0116 223 1100, the Modern Languages School Office, telephone 0116 252 2682, the University Music Department, telephone 0116 252 2781, the University Bookshop, and on the door. Please arrive in good time as this event regularly gets a full house and queues on the door!
