Examinations are harrowing enough on their own, but one Leicester University medical student found himself having to sandwich his second-year exams between spells of service in the navy due to the Kosovan crisis.
Elton Pardoe was a navigator in the Royal Navy before enrolling as a mature medical student at the University. As the Kosovan crisis deepened, he was recalled to the Navy with the reserves to replace someone who had to leave the ship, but was allowed back to Leicester for the examination period.
He returns to HMS Ocean, the Royal Navy's latest aircraft carrier on Sunday 20 June 1999.
An interview with Elton Pardoe can be arranged through the Leicester University Press Office, tel 0116 252 2415 and photographs of him in uniform and on HMS Ocean can be supplied.
