[Press & Publications] Appointment for University Mathematician

August 2000

No 158

Professor Iain Stewart, of the University of Leicester Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, has been appointed MathFIT Co-ordinator by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Professor Stewart is one of the leading UK researchers working at the interface between mathematics and computer science, and it is hoped that his wide-ranging knowledge and expertise can be used to encourage collaborations between other researchers in mathematics and computer science.

MathFIT (Mathematics for Information Technology) is an EPSRC-funded initiative to encourage research at the interface between mathematics and computer science. The initiative is also supported by the London Mathematical Society, the UKs learned society for academic mathematicians.

As Co-ordinator, Professor Stewart, who was until recently Head of the University's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, will be the focal point for researchers interested in submitting research grant, network and visiting fellowship proposals under MathFIT, for which 1.5 million per year has been earmarked for the next three years.

Another aspect of his role will be to disseminate information about MathFIT amongst the community and he will be giving seminars at more than twenty mathematics and computer science departments over the next year.

Professor Stewart said: "The pervasiveness of mathematics in science and technology is not well appreciated.

"Many day-to-day activities, which we all take for granted, rely crucially on mathematics for their initiation and continued success. For example: sophisticated algorithms are used to allocate the radio frequency spectrum which is central to the operation of mobile phones, and the difficulty of computationally solving certain problems in number theory lies at the heart of security protocols used in electronic bank transactions. One aim of the MathFIT initiative is to provide a climate where new inter-disciplinary collaborations between mathematics and computer science can flourish."
