International Moot Competition at Leicester

January 2003
No 28

The air will be full of lively rhetoric on Thursday, February 6, 2003, when the University of Leicester Faculty of Law hosts the National Round of the prestigious Telders International Law Moot Court Competition.

The Leicester team of four students taking International Law will be competing with teams from five other universities to see who will represent the UK in The Hague in the spring. The Leicester team consists of Margaret McGowan-Smyth, Lee Barraclough, Arfan Sarwar, Irfan Malik. The other teams will be coming to Leicester from Sheffield, Nottingham, Coventry, and Essex.

Troy Lavers, organiser of the competition at Leicester said: “Mooting is a very well established student activity here. We have an internal competition which is sponsored by Freshfield’s, a leading London firm of solicitors and we compete in various inter-varsity competitions, including The English speaking Union Mooting competition, the Blackstone’s Mooting Competition, the Weekly Law Reports Mooting Competition and The Inner Temple Inter-Varsity Moot.”

The Telders International Law Moot Court Competition, run from Leiden University in the Netherlands, began in 1977. Each year student teams are presented with a case involving a fictitious dispute between two states, which they are required to defend as if in the International Court of Justice. This year the moot problem is based on issues of immunity and International Law similar to some aspects the famous Pinochet case of a few years ago.

The competition is open to the public but space is limited. The winners will be announced at an evening reception sponsored by the firm of Harvey Ingram Owston.
