[Press and Publications] Part Time - Full Commitment: Degree Success for Lifelong Learning Students

July 2001

No. 87

The University of Leicester Department of Adult Education, in the Institute of Lifelong Learning is celebrating a bumper crop of results among its students graduating with a BA in Humanities.

Out of a total of 21 students, three have achieved first class degrees and 10 upper seconds.

Head of Department Dr David Parsons said: “This is an excellent result by any standards, but even more so for our candidates, most of whom are in full-time employment and who study exclusively in the evenings over five years part-time.”

Students who have done particularly well include:

  • Maggie Warrington. In spite of a busy schedule as a practice nurse, Maggie has been studying with the Department of Adult Education at Vaughan College for 11 years and has received the Humanities/World Humanities Prize for the most outstanding contribution to the course overall.
  • Two sisters will be celebrating their upper second class degrees jointly. Andrea Clarke and Annette Strong began the five-year programme together in 1996, first taking the Certificate in Modern Social history before progressing to the BA Humanities. They achieved their success with a mixture of friendly rivalry and mutual encouragement. Andrea’s husband, who has just had a knee operation, is determined to attend the degree ceremony without his wheelchair.
  • All these students will receive their degrees at the University of Leicester Degree Congregation at the De Montfort Hall, Leicester, at 11 am on Wednesday 11 July 2001.
