University of Leicester politics experts in conference on Europe at House of Commons
The University of Leicester is organizing a major national conference on the future of Europe to be addressed by the Former President of Poland Lech Walesa.

Experts on Europe from the University’s Department of Politics will also address the conference on June 14 at the House of Commons. They include Professor Adrian Hyde-Price (the Chair of Politics and International Relations) and Karen Henderson (Senior Lecturer in Politics and conference director).

Leicester East MP Keith Vaz is the conference Chairman and Denis MacShane, the Minister for Europe, and Derek Mapp, Chairman of emda, are among the distinguished speakers.

Professor Hyde-Price said: “On 1 May 2004 the European Union will experience its biggest enlargement yet, but there’s still been relatively little debate about what this is going to mean for Britain. We hear a lot about the euro and more recently the new European constitution, but few people discuss how different Europe will be when it has 25 members instead of 15.

“This conference provides a high-level public forum where the benefits and costs of European Enlargement can be discussed. It will bring together Ministers from Britain and the new Member States, Senior Civil Servants from the European Commission, MEPs, Business Representatives, Lawyers and Academics. There will also be an accompanying publication where the Prime Ministers of the candidate countries who will shortly be joining the European Union talk about their own visions of the new, enlarged Europe.

The Conference will examine:

· Costs and Benefits of Enlargement· Enlargement and Reform· Opportunities for Business in Eastern Europe· Nation States or United States of Europe?· The EuroThe keynote speaker is the former President of Poland Lech Walesa, who symbolises the political struggle which led to the defeat of Communism and opened the way to the inclusion of Eastern European in the European. The other speakers include Guido de Marco, the President of Malta; Malcolm Wicks MP, Minister in the Department for Work and Pensions; and Lord Goldsmith QC, the Attorney General.
