PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: There
will be a photo opportunity of Bishop Tim and his daughter Rachel after the
ceremony on Friday, January 24 at approximately 12.45pm at De Montfort Hall,
will be great excitement in the home of the Bishop of Leicester on Friday,
January 24, as both the Right Reverend Tim Stevens and his 24-year-old daughter,
Rachel, will be receiving degrees from the University of Leicester.
The Bishop will be awarded an honorary doctorate for 'notable
contribution in his field' together with 3 other distinguished people and 1,400
postgraduate students during two ceremonies at the De Montfort Hall, Leicester.
Tim will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters and Rachel will receive
her MSc in Social Research at the ceremony that begins at 11.30am.
A spokesperson for the University of Leicester said, “We’ve had
parent and child graduations before, but this is certainly the first time
we’ve ever had a Bishop with his daughter.”
Rachel’s dissertation was about ‘Race
Relations in Leicester’ and she conducted extensive research amongst community
leaders to ascertain if Leicester really lived up to its reputation as a city of
harmony. She commented,
“I very much enjoyed doing my post-graduate course and feel I learned
a lot from it.The ceremony will be particularly special because Dad will
be receiving such important recognition for his work too.”
Tim said, “I am proud and honoured to be receiving this doctorate, although I
suspect the 1,400 students who will be graduating on Friday might feel it’s
come rather too easily to me – my daughter included!"
