The University of Leicester Student Community Action Group, Contact, is holding a Millennium Volunteers Celebration event this month.

Students who beam involved in voluntary work through Contact are able to take part in the Millennium Volunteers scheme, which is a new UK wide initiative run by the DfEE to recognise the hours of voluntary work done by 16-24 year olds.

Of the 180 volunteers registered with Contact this year, 75 of these students have chosen to take on the challenge of the Millennium Volunteers scheme and are trying to achieve 100 or 200 hours of voluntary work over a 2 year period.

Nine students have achieved 200 hours and 13 have achieved 100 hours. To celebrate their success and the work done by all the other volunteers who have dedicated their time to the local community over the last year, Contact are holding a celebration event.

A display of the work that Contact has been involved in over the last year will be arranged.

The celebration takes place on Monday, June 19, 2000 at 7.30 pm in the Park Lounge, 5th Floor, Charles Wilson Building. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Robert Burgess, will be presenting the Awards and Certificates from 8-9 pm. This will be followed by a Jazz band which will play until 11 pm.
