October 2002
No 237

The University of Leicester Institute of Lifelong Learning is holding a ceremony at its Northampton Centre on Friday 1 November to commemorate the life and work of one of its former professors who died in April this year.

Described by colleagues as “a giant influence of our lives and times”, Emeritus Professor Henry Arthur Jones was Vaughan Professor of Adult and Continuing Education at the University from 1967-1981. A leading figure in the Government’s Russell Report on Adult Education in England, he was awarded the CBE.

Professor John Benyon, Director of the Leicester Institute of Lifelong Learning, said:

Arthur Jones was a remarkable man, full of energy and enthusiasm, and with a quick wit and strong sense of humour. He established the University of Leicester at the forefront of adult education and campaigned tirelessly for what we now call lifelong learning opportunities in higher education. Arthur believed that education can open doors to new opportunities and to help to develop the spiritual side of people's lives. He welcomed our new Institute of Lifelong Learning at the University and would have approved of our latest message - 'broaden your horizons and enrich your life.'  Professor Jones had an international reputation in his field and we aim to build on his work and ideals.

Professor Jones was a major figure in adult education in Britain and abroad and played a central role in the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), members of which will be attending the commemorative ceremony. He was Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Leicester from 1979 until his retirement in 1981.

Director of Studies at the Northampton Centre, Mr Gerald Porter said: “Arthur as we knew him was pre-eminent in supporting adults and continuing education on behalf of the University within Northamptonshire. Apart from donating his library many tutors and lecturers will remember him as he was a respected figure in tutor education and also for supporting the work at the Northampton Centre.”

The ceremony, to commemorate Henry Arthur Jones will be conducted by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Leicester Professor Robert Burgess who will unveil the memorial. The ceremony will take place at the University's centre in Northampton on Friday 1 November at 12.30 noon and will be followed by a buffet lunch. Attendance is by invitation only.
