Professor Liam Donaldson, the most senior medical officer in the country and the man charged with looking after the nation's health will be giving the 2000 Convocation Lecture at the University of Leicester on 1st March.
This free public lecture is given annually by a distinguished graduate of the University. Professor Donaldson studied at the University and is a former member of staff.
Professor Donaldson will be addressing the topic of 'Quality: The Health Care Challenge of the 21st Century'.
Expanding on an issue which became prominent in health care industries in the late '80s and early '90s, Professor Donaldson will seek to show why it is that the issue of quality and clinical governance is central to the goals and aspirations of the National Health Service as it aims to provide a comprehensive and state-of-the-art service in the new Millennium.
As he stated on his last trip to the University of Leicester in April 1999, 'the clinical governance initiative is one of the most important of the Government's policies in the NHS.'
It is particularly apt that Professor Donaldson should return to Leicester to give this lecture as he was formerly a Lecturer in the University's Department of Community Health, and subsequently became Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology in 1981 when he also gained his MD. He acknowledged during his last visit that his 'interest in quality began in Leicester' and that his time spent in the Department of Community Health 'laid the foundation for my career.'
Graduate Relations Officer Ms Kathryn Whitehurst said: "As one of many distinguished graduates to give the traditional Convocation lectures, it is appropriate that Professor Donaldson should return to his alma mater to expound on the concepts and principles which are to guide our National Health Service in the years ahead.
"Previous distinguished graduates who have delivered the Convocation Lecture include mountaineer David Hempleman-Adams, the late actor Derek Nimmo, former ITN war correspondent Michael Nicholson and author Malcolm Bradbury.
"These public lectures are always well supported and we look forward to welcoming members of the public and the University."
The lecture will take place at 8.00pm on Wednesday 1st March, Lecture Theatre 1, New Building, University of Leicester.
