Students at the University of Leicester will be celebrating their volunteering achievements on Monday, June 17 from 6.30pm-8.30pm at the University of Leicester Charles Wilson Building.

Awards will be presented by Devon Malcolm from Leicestershire County Cricket Club for students who have shown a commitment to volunteering in their community.

Over 300 students volunteer with Contact, the student volunteering association at the Students' Union. Contact receives the majority of funding from the Millennium Volunteers scheme, a national initiative that rewards young people aged 16-24 for showing a sustained commitment to volunteering in their community.

Projects that students have set up and run include:

Pro Bono a free legal advice in the community project, which this year won the national Student Challenge Competition,

SCAMP (Student Community Action Mobility Playgroup) a weekly playgroup for children with physical disabilities that takes place on the University Campus,

Partnerships for Progression - a mentoring scheme for young people who don't have a family back-ground of Higher Education run in partnership with the NUS, the Leicester Education and Business Company and Widening Participation Initiative at the University of Leicester.

Kids Camp- a residential holiday scheme for children who are in care or at risk.
