Students in Leicester are set to find out at first hand their employment prospects in face-to-face meetings with business, industry and professional representatives at the University of Leicester.
The University of Leicester Careers Service is organising a Careers Fair for its undergraduate and postgraduate students. This will take place on Tuesday 20 June 2000. Students from De Montfort University have also been invited to attend and to take advantage of the chance to meet a range of major employers.
Mr Martin Pennington, Assistant Director of the Careers Service, said: “There is a mixture of types of organisations attending the Fair. Many employers are coming for recruitment purposes and the event provides these employers with access to a large number of potential recruits. Others are providing information only and are pleased to be able to get their message across to the considerable body of second year students attending.”
“The opportunities for students are wide with many professions and industries being represented. Over 1000 students normally come to the Fair and they will have the chance either to chat informally about different career options or to meet employers with vacancies to fill. This benefits all students - those only a year or two into their course who want to plan ahead, and those graduating this summer who want to get started on their career straight away.”
The list of organisations that have already booked a stand includes household names such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, HSBC Bank, KPMG, the NHS, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Arthur Andersen, Inland Revenue, Rolls-Royce, Alliance and Leicester, Racal and Leicestershire Constabulary; professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants; and voluntary bodies including Frontier Conservation, VSO, the Prince’s Youth Business Trust and Leicester Volunteer Bureau. There will also be staff from both local universities on hand to advise on postgraduate opportunities.
In previous years the Fair has received praise from those attending; the Leicestershire Constabulary, who will be attending again this year, have described it as a “well organised event - worthy of an annual attendance.”
At the University of Leicester, the Fair forms part of Careers Week - a programme of workshops, seminars and employer presentations organised for its students by the Careers Service. The programme gives practical help in a range of skills - all aimed at making Leicester students even more successful in the competitive graduate employment market. Local graduates are also welcome to attend; they might also be interested in the activities of the Graduate Action Group that meets on alternate Wednesday evenings at the University Careers Service.
Leicester Careers Fair 2000 - open to students and postgraduates of both universities and local graduates - will take place on Tuesday 20 June in the Sports Hall, Charles Wilson Building, the University of Leicester from 11 am to 4 pm.
