Contribution recognised in naming ceremonies

Two buildings at the University of Leicester are to be named after distinguished individuals who have played major roles in shaping the success of the University.

Sir Edwin Nixon, Chairman of the University Council from 1992-1998, will have the University's student accommodation in Putney Road named after him. It will henceforth be known as Nixon Court.

Dr Kenneth Edwards, the University's former Vice-Chancellor (1987-1999) will have the New Building named after him. It will henceforth be called The Ken Edwards Building.

The naming ceremonies, in the presence of the respective individuals, will take place to coincide with the University's graduation ceremonies - a high point in the academic year.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Burgess said: Naming University buildings after those who have played an invaluable role in the University's life provides a lasting tribute to their contribution, dedication and achievements.

By dedicating these buildings to these individuals, the University of Leicester is recording for posterity its appreciation and gratitude for their many contributions to the life and work of the University. They will join other people of note at the University, whose names have been set in stone.

Sir Edwin Nixon, who was born in Leicester and went to school in the city, was associated with the University first as a member of its Council and then as Chairman for six years (1992-98).

Dr Kenneth Edwards was the University's fourth Vice-Chancellor and a former Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals. He is currently Chair of the CRE - the Association of European Universities, an international body of 500 European universities in 40 countries.

The Putney Road student accommodation for more than 700 students was completed in 1994 and the New Building was opened in 1995 by Sir Michael Atiyah, the University's current Chancellor.
