The University of Leicester Greenwood Institute of Child Health has been a partner in a project that has won the Leicestershire Health Authority the NHS Beacon Award.
The award was made earlier this year for a joint strategy on mental health services for children and families in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. This is a partnership of health agencies, local authorities and voluntary agencies across the region.
It operates within a joint planning framework for children, recommending, implementing and monitoring developments through a joint steering group chaired by the health authority. The result has been the design and implementation of a range of innovative and effective services.
The Greenwood Institute's part in this project has been the multi agency child mental health training of primary care workers across all agencies. The department has evaluated services, including Child Behaviour Intervention initiatives, a Home Intervention project, a Primary Mental Health Worker role in a Youth Offending team and Looked After Children teams, and Family Support Service for Homeless Children. From February 2002 they will run a part time day release Postgraduate certificate/Diploma/MSc in Child Mental health providing an opportunity to learn in a multi disciplinary forum with tutors from a range of clinical and academic backgrounds.
The Leicestershire Health Child and Adolescent Mental Health department is holding an information day on Tuesday 25 September 2001, between 10 am and 4 pm at the Belvoir Room, Charles Wilson building, University of Leicester, University Road, Leicester. People from health, education, social services and the voluntary sectors are invited to come along to find out more about the local Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMH) project and Beacon Status.
