Award for Leicester Graduate
ALSTOM's Graduate of the Year: Liz Burgess
For the second year running, a University of Leicester engineering graduate has won ALSTOM’s Graduate of the Year Award.
Liz Burgess, who graduated from the University in 2001 with a first class degree of BEng Mechanical (Industry in Europe), worked for ALSTOM during her degree course and re-joined the company full-time following her graduation.
The award is part of a scheme operated by ALSTOM’s Technology Centre based in Whetstone, Leicester, to ensure employees’ contributions and achievements are recognised. Employees nominate their colleagues for a number of different awards representing a range of activities. Winners are then selected by a panel and an award presentation is made in September each year.
University of Leicester graduates have been doing well. Last year’s ALSTOM winner was Nic Allen, who graduated in 2000 from Leicester.
Liz is on ALSTOM’s IMechE accredited training scheme, which will provide her with the development opportunities and competencies she needs before she can be elected as a Member of IMechE and achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
After taking her ‘A’ Levels at Hull Grammar School, Liz Burgess joined the University of Leicester to take a BEng Mechanical (Industry in Europe) degree course. As part of her degree programme she spent a year working for ALSTOM in Belfort in eastern France near the Swiss and German borders. Her main field of interest is in Materials and she is also hoping to become more involved with Six Sigma, a process improvement tool increasingly used worldwide by major companies.
Liz Burgess said: “I was very surprised and pleased to be named Graduate of the Year- I have found all my placements so far really interesting and challenging, and hope I will continue to justify ALSTOM’s investment in my training. My experiences with ALSTOM have reinforced my enthusiasm for engineering, which was founded by the excellent teaching and guidance I received during my degree at the University of Leicester.”
Head of the University of Leicester
Department of Engineering Professor Ian Postlethwaite added: “Liz Burgess was
a very bright and popular student. Everyone
in Engineering knew Liz and now it looks as though everyone in ALSTOM also knows
Liz Burgess. I am delighted that she
continues to do well. She is a credit to
