Leicester Librarian is
the City's First Choice
The annual presentation and awards ceremony took place at De Montfort Hall in February and as usual, Chris had to fend off some tough competition. Chris was up against last year’s winner, Vic Barnett, the world mountain biking champion in his age group, and race walker Brian Ashwell.
Chris was first nominated by readers of the Leicester Mercury in November, and was then voted for by the public as one of the top three nominees. A panel of sports personalities and sports editors then chose Chris as the Veteran Sports Personality of the Year out of the three selected contenders.
Chris is very proud to have won the award. She said: “I was overwhelmed by the number of cards and emails congratulating me on winning this award, even more than I had received in September after winning the World Gold!”
Chris had attended the Awards ceremony the previous year with her partner British Olympic triathlon team manager and coach, David Bellingham, and had wondered then what somebody had to do to win such an award. With a medal tally of World duathlon bronze in 2000, National Sprint Triathlon age-group winner and World duathlon age-group gold-medallist 2001, Chris really is a Sports Personality and is definitely a true champion.
