Obituary: Joan Sylvester-Bradley
Joan Sylvester-Bradley, wife of the late Peter Sylvester-Bradley, the first F W Bennett Professor of Geology of the University died on February 8 aged 84 after a short illness. She was an enthusiastic supporter and friend of many activities of the University. A former lecturer in Geography at Reading and Librarian by training, her special talent and priority was as a family-maker.
Department of Geology in particular owes a great deal to her energy and skills
in helping to create a sense of family for the Department and in her support
for the student-led Sylvester-Bradley Geological Society and the postgraduate
award established in memory of Peter.
Caring, and with a sense of purpose, she was much loved and respected by all. She will be sorely missed, not least by her wide circle of friends and colleagues at home and around the world. She is survived by her daughter and three sons from her marriage to Peter Sylvester-Bradley, and by their six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
