PNEUMOCYSTIS CARINII PNEUMONIA

WELL DONE!

The cause of death, as recorded on the death certificate, was listed as

  1. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia
  2. AIDS/HIV infection

This is by far the most common opportunistic infection occuring in AIDS patients and is a major killer (~25% mortality - even after treatment).

This protozoa was probably inhaled by the patient during childhood and remained latent until he reached his immunocompromised state.

The treatment is Trimethoprim or Sulphamethaxazole - for 21 days.
