The cause of death, as recorded on the death certificate, was listed as

1a Cerebral infarct
1b Cerebral embolus
1c Atherosclerosis of carotid arteries

The man's TIAs were a pointer to what was to come. Unfortunately he suffered cerebral infarction which killed him. The CT scan and also autopsy report confirmed this as the cause of death. The infarction would not have occurred without the atherosclerosis, which creates a site for thrombi to form. From there they dislodge, passing to the brain where they block the narrow arteries.
