BRONCHOALVEOLAR LAVAGE

This procedure is diagnostic in many infective conditions of the lung such as HIV associated Pneumocystis carinii infections, tuberculosis, viral infections and fungal infections.

This procedure involves wedging the tip of a bronchoscope into a bronchus (subsegmental), instilling a known volume of saline solution into the distal airway, then aspirating up this volume of saline and sending it to the labratory for analysis.
