The neutrophil leukocytosis shown indicates large numbers of neutrophils present in the patient's system;this suggests that there is some sort of acute inflammatory response going on here. A blood film was prepared (see RES report).

A quick glance at your medical dictionary tells you that thrombocytopenia is a reduction in the number of platelets in the blood; this may be due to a failure of platelet production or excessive destruction of platelets once they have been manufactured - in the latter case, it often follows (or runs alongside) viral infection, chronic leukaemia, and solid tumours.

As platelet numbers are reduced, clotting is impaired, and bruising often readily occurs under the skin.
