The Society has a keen interest in historic buildings and structures in the city and county. For much of the 20th century it campaigned for the preservation of a number of significant including the Guildhall and the Sun Alliance building in Town Hall Square. On a more general scale the Panel submitted lists of appropriate buildings within Leicestershire it considered suitable for listing during the course of the nation-wide re-listing survey of the 1970s and 1980s. One outcome of this latter activity was establishing more direct dialogue with the building conservation officers working at district and county level. Over the course of the past 30 years the Historic Buildings Panel has been consulted by several district councils in the county as well as Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council in respect of planning applications relating to listed buildings and conservation areas.
