The Polyptych of Wissembourg
1 Wissembourg
1.1 In Wissembourg were found 400 iurnales of the manor, 200 meadows, with 58 farmsteads.
1.2 In the months of July and August each one owes service one day a week. After these two months they owe service one day a week and send 1 man to work in the vineyards; 2 to plough iurnales. Each one pays 100 poles and 1 measure of timber, 17 chickens and 15 eggs. Above and beyond that they owe a fortnight’s service once a year. Once a year they also help make wine in Unkenstein. They supply two horses to the army, give barefrida to the servants of the king, and likewise owe service to the abbot here and in the neighbouring mansion [i.e. Altenstadt].
1.3 In the aforementioned 58 farmsteads there are 12 who each owe 1 pictura. The women make cloth 10x4 cubits and if they don’t they must give 5 chickens.
2 Altenstadt
2.1 By Altenstadt lie 44 farmsteads pertaining to the work of the lord abbot, of which every owners pays by order as follows…: for pruning 5 denarii; for digging up vines 10 denarii; for digging them up anew 4 denarii; for binding vines 3 denarii; for cutting back hay 6 denarii; for collecting hay the work is sufficient; at harvest time the work is sufficient; for pressing grapes the work is sufficient; for preparing wine vessels the work is sufficient; for gathering grapes the work is sufficient; 1 schar, 4 chickens, 6 eggs; for removing vines the work is sufficient; for the keeping of captive thieves [careful concern] (but they are meanwhile to abstain from work).
2.2 Except for 24 farmsteads, which lie by other parts of the river, they must pay the abbot 50 roof tiles and ½ a cartload of wood, and 2 cartloads [of wood] to the keeper of the storeroom. The other farmsteads, which lie next to other parts of the river, pay the abbot 100 roof tiles and 1 cartload [of wood].
2.3 It is however known that 3 of these farmsteads pay everything in terms of work for the abbot. It is also known that 3 of these farmsteads make a single payment of 3 chickens and ½ a schar.
2.4 The farmstead of Hazzeche securim et achiam. Indeed this has 1 part of work and the working on vomeres, ploughing 3 fields and making bricks. In this work Hugo pays for the materials for the hilltops and in other homes. The farmstead of Amelungi pays 2 uncia, and hitherto remains the farmstead of Hugo and Hunfrid. Oggerus pays 1 vomerus and Hugo pays 2. In the home of Vocwin 1, his son Hertwic 1, Eberold and his son Heinric 1, Gunter 1, Marquard 1, Mehtilt and his wife Gerwini 1, Hertericus 1, Sifridus 1, Wernherus 1, Silfridus and Billung and Helwic 1.
3 Klingen
3.1 In Klingen there are 420 iurnales of the manor, 7 cartloads of wine, 60 meadows, and 31 farmsteads.
3.2 Each week the men owe 3 days. They make 1 tribute of suckling pig at Easter, 2 chickens, 15 eggs, 3 men to plough iurnales. Whenever work needs doing, each man is to proceed to the monastery with his plough. They owe 2 cows for the army with ½ a plough and 1 man. For the service of the king in a year ½ a plough or 10 denarii.
3.3 10 farmsteads pay 9 cloths 10x4 cubits. 21 farmsteads pay cloth 5x4 cubits with shoe buckles. In Winter, when there will not be fattening, 3 pigs are to be suckled. Grain and bread is to be prepared by order.
4 Leinsweiler
4.1 In Leinsweiler there are [...] iurnales of the manor, 25 cartloads of wine, 100 meadows, and 33 farmsteads. And each one owes 3 days a week and 16 of them owe 3 chickens. 2 to plough iurnales, and to proceed [to the monastery] with their plough by order. Their wives provide cloth 5x4 cubits. 17 farmsteads in Autumn are to plough 3 iurnales, 2 in Winter, and are to pay 5 chickens and 15 eggs. Among these 17 are 12 who at Easter each make 1 tribute of suckling pig, while the wives of the other 4 make cloth 5x4 cubits with shoe buckles, and the aforementioned 4 also make cloth 10x4 cubits. Grain and bread is to be prepared by order. 1 man from among them is to pay 15 liquid measures of wine.
5 St Johann
5.1 In St Johann there are 150 iurnales belonging to the manor, 9 cartloads of wine, 30 meadows, 16 are farmsteads, and 3 to Sulta.
5.2 13 each [are to provide service] 3 days a week; and 6 from among them owe 1 tribute of suckling pig at Easter, 5 chickens, and 15 eggs. They are to plough 3 iurnales in Autumn and 2 in Spring; and 7 others are to plough 2 areas in Autumn and 1 in Spring. Alternately they pay 2 chickens 1 year and 3 chickens the next. They pay 10 eggs, and 2 suckling pigs in Winter; and 5 from 7 make ½ a tribute of suckling pig; and everyone with their plough is to proceed [to the monastery] by order. For the army, 2 cows with ½ plough and 1 one man. 10 of their wives make cloth 5x4 cubits with shoe buckles; and2 of them pay 1 denarius and another 30 pay 2 unciae. 4 from the aforesaid 13 owe 3 suckling pigs in Winter.
6 Pfortz
6.1 In Pfortz there are in a circle 485 iurnales of the manor, 200 meadows, and 72 farmsteads.
6.2 In the farmsteads reside 33 free men, holding 33 unfree farms. Everyone owes 1 cow [for the army] and 2 mares, and each a tribute of suckling pigs in 1 year, 3 chickens. Each is to plough 3 iurnales. Each is to pay 50 poles and 1 measure of wood. Everyone in a year is to give a fortnight’s service to the monastery, 3 days to cut hay, 2 messengers a year, give barefrida for service to the king, to bring oblations to the palace by order, and from their women no service is owed.
6.3 In 39 farmsteads reside servants who owe 3 days service per week, 5 chickens and 15 eggs. They are to make watch when ordered. They are to prepare white grain and bread. Their messenger is to be ready by order when there is work. The women are to make linen cloth 10x4 cubits.
7 Edesheim
7.1 In Edesheim there are 250 iurnales of the manor, 100 meadows, 30 cartloads of wine, 24 ½ standard-sized farmsteads, and 3 mills from which come 40 measures.
7.2 Twice in Winter they owe a fortnight’s service, after which they are to tend to the vineyards and elsewhere as necessary. 12 each owe 15 liquid measures [of wine], 13 owe 7 liquid measures [of wine], and 14 owe 20 liquid measures of beer. Each of the 24 farmsteads is to give 1 tribute of suckling pig. Each of the aforementioned 13 who deliver wine owes 5 chickens and 15 eggs and 11 alternately owe 3 chickens one year and 2 chickens the next plus 15 eggs. 3 times a year they are to proceed with their carriages, and in Autumn each one, apart from 6, must plough 3 iurnales, and likewise in Spring, while the aforementioned 13 are to plough 2 iurnales in Autumn and Spring. Their wives make cloth of 10 cubits with shoe buckles. They pay 2 cows for the army with ½ a plough and 1 man, and pro pice for the service of the king they are to give 10 denarii or ½ a plough.
8 Herxheim
8.1 In Herxheim there are 254 iurnales of the manor, 40 of meadows, 40 liquid measures of wine. There are 9 farmsteads, each of which owe a fortnight’s service 4 times a year and 1 day’s service each week. They are to plough 3 iurnales in Autumn and 2 iurnales in Spring. And 6 from among them each owe 1 fattened pig or 5 solidi or 15 liquid measures of wine; 3 more owe 30 denarii; and 4 owe 1 uncia. They are to collect in grain and hay. Three times a year they are to proceed with their plough [to the monastery]. At Easter, each farmstead owes 1 tribute of suckling pig or 9 denarii, 5 chickens and 15 eggs. The women are to make ½ linen cloth with special thread or pay 1 solidi. 1 cow is owed for the army with ½ a plough and 1 man.
9 Ottersheim
9.1 In Ottersheim there are [...] iurnales of the manor, 100 meadows, 4 wine, 13 standard-sized farmsteads and 5 half-sized farmsteads.
9.2 Each week they owe 3 days service, and in Autumn and Spring they are to plough 3 iurnales. 13 farmsteads pay 13 tributes of suckling pigs, plus 5 denarii, 5 chickens, and 15 eggs. 3 times a year they are to proceed with their ploughs [to the monastery]. The women are to make ½ linen cloth with special thread. 1 cow is owed to the army with half a plough and 1 man.
10 Altdorf
10.1 In Altdorf there are 306 iurnales of the manor, 100 meadows, 40 cartloads of wine, 40 standard-sized farmsteads, and 1 mill which produces 50 measures. 1 fattened pig.
10.2 From 14 farmsteads, each is to produce 15 liquid measures of wine. All 40 farmsteads owe 3 days service a week, 1 tribute of suckling pig at Easter, and twice a year are to proceed with their plough. From the 14 who provide wine, 5 chickens, 15 eggs; from the other 26, 3 chickens, 15 eggs. In Autumn to plough 3 iurnales, and in Spring 2 iurnales. Their wives…. 4 cows are owed for the army with ½ plough and 2 men, while for the royal peace they owe 1 uncia or 1 plough.
11 Hassloch
11.1 In Hassloch there are 720 iurnales of the manor, 4 mills, which produce 200 measures, 10 cartloads of wine, 60 meadows, and 60½ farmsteads.
11.2 20 of these farmsteads each owe 20 liquid measures of wine, and 2 owe 15. Those who do not have wine are to pay 30 solidi. Each farmstead owes 40 denarii, ploughs 3 iurnales in Autumn and Spring, owes a fortnight’s service in Winter or pays 9 denarii; the other hamlets owe 7 days of service and are to make the manor’s wine. Each farmstead makes a tribute of 1 suckling pig at Easter and 3 pigs in Winter. 6 farmsteads are to be vigilant. Twice a year they are to proceed with their plough. All 60 for the royal peace owe 2 unciae or 2 plough. Each one owes 5 chickens, 15 eggs, and 4 cows for the army with 3 men and 2 mares. To the royal palace everyone, except those 6 who give their vigilance, is to proceed in turns twice and bring oblations. Each is to make fences for their parts and, when there is work, they are to improve the building of the manor. At harvest time they are to collect up hay and grain. They are to pay barefrida for the service of the king and abbot in their provinces. Their wives are to prepare bread and beer.
12 Mussbach
12.1 In Mussbach there are 250 iurnales of the manor, 30 cartloads of wine, 30 meadows, and 26 farmsteads.
12.2 Each farmstead owes 3 days service a week. 19 farmsteads each owe 1 tribute of suckling pig at Easter. 2 of the 26 owe 1 cartload of wine and 2 others owe 20 liquid measures of wine. Each farmstead except those 4 [who produce wine] owes 3 chickens and 10 eggs; the other 4 owe 5 chickens and 15 eggs. In a year 2 scaras. Their wives will make linen cloth 10x4 cubits.
12.3 There are 4 mills, and they make 40 measures. And 2 fattened pigs.
13 Mutterstadt
13.1 In Mutterstadt there are 450 iurnales of the manor, 3 cartloads of wine and 16½ farmsteads.
13.2 In terms of service, they owe the same as Eyersheim. And to Mutah there are 1½ farmsteads.
13.3 They owe to the palace or for the army, wither themselves or by sending their horsemen, and give 3 unciae at Easter and likewise owe service as in Mutah. Apart from this, their wives do not make cloth, nor do the men provide watch, prepare bread or beer. From the ½ farmstead, only ½ the service is owed. The 1 farmstead in Mutterstadt is to proceed to send under the abbot or his horsemen, pay 3 unciae at Easter, plough 6 iurnales in Autumn and Spring, and fatten 2 pigs in Winter.
14 Eyersheim
14.1 In Eyersheim there are 331 iurnales of the manor, 150 meadows, and 10½ farmsteads.
14.2 Each of the 10 farmsteads: owes 3 days’ service a week; is to plough 2 iurnales in Autumn and in Spring; is to proceed with their plough twice a year; is to proceed with a boat at order; to make 2 areas fenced. They each owe 5 chickens, 15 eggs, make one tribute of suckling pig at Easter, provide 1 cartload of wood, are to provide watch, are to prepare bread and beer, and every other year they are to pay 1 carrata or 1 uncia to the royal servants pro pice. 1 cow is owed [for the army] with 4 parts of plough, to proceed for the pleasure of the king, and 1 man is to be sent to help with the harvest. Their wives are to make sarcile 10x4 cubits.
15 Lambsheim
15.1 In Lambsheim there are 317 iurnales of the manor, 80 meadows, 4 cartloads of wine, 8 farmsteads, and 10 have a priest in beneficium.
15.2 They owe service just like the farmsteads in Eyersheim, except that they do not give a carrata to the royal servants pro pice, but rather at any time work, giving wood and light, et cum ministrare. Each gives 5 denarii for the army and every year proceeds with his plough, and every year prepares 10 measures of malt for beer, and likewise prepares bread. There are 2 farmsteads who are to proceed to send under the abbot or his horsemen, pay 3 unciae to the representative of St Martin’s church, and generally to provide service in the manner of the aforementioned servants. Neither will the wives make cloth, nor the men provide watch or prepare bread or wine. And it is the 3rd farmstead, which owes the aforementioned service with horse and censu and with all plough. In Winter 2 pigs are to be fattened.
16 Littersheim
16.1 In Littersheim there are 283 iurnales of the manor, 1 cartload of wine, 100 meadows, and 15 farmsteads.
16.2 Each of these farmsteads, when working, are to build and, whenever necessary, to make, in Autumn and Spring to plough 6 iurnales, to collect up grain and hay, to make 1 area fenced, to give 1 tribute of suckling pig at Easter, 5 chickens, 15 eggs, 100 poles, 5 cartloads of wood, to provide 1 fortnight of service each Winter or to give 8 denarii. Also, they are to prepare 10 loaves of bread plus beer, to provide watch when ordered, and twice a year to proceed with the plough. Each is to send 1 man to help with the harvest. 5 of the aforementioned 15 pay 30 denarii to the representative of St Martin’s church.
16.3 A 16th farmstead has a priest in beneficium.
16.4 The wives of 10 of them each pay 1 solidi to the representative of St Martin’s church. The remaining 5 farmsteads owe 30 denarii, or else are to send a legation under the abbot or his horseman.
17 Westhofen
17.1 In Westhofen there are 335 iurnales of the manor, 12 cartloads of wine, 40 meadows, 43½ farmsteads.
17.2 From these, 18 farmsteads owe 15 liquid measures of wine; another 13 farmsteads owe 30 liquid measures of wine; another 3 farmsteads owe 25 liquid measures of wine; another 6 farmsteads owe 10 liquid measures of wine.
17.3 Each farmstead in Autumn has to plough 2 iurnales and likewise [2 iurnales] in Spring. Each is to give a tribute of suckling pig at Easter, 5 chickens, 15 eggs, and 100 axilia, 6 cartloads of wood. In Winter each is to provide a fortnight’s service or pay 9 denarii. During harvest time each farmstead is to provide 1 day’s service a week, 3 days to collect hay, and to send 1 man to help with harvest. Twice a year each farmstead is to proceed with the plough, make 4 areas fenced, and to proceed with boats by order either to Frankfurt or to Littersheim. Each farmstead, because it is not fattened, is to nourish 2 pigs in Winter. The aforementioned 18 farmsteads, who must give 20 liquid measures, and prepare bread and beer…
18 Weinholdsheim
18.1 In Weinholdsheim there are 408 iurnales of the manor, 20 cartloads of wine, 50 meadows, and 21½ farmsteads.
18.2 From among these there are 7 farmsteads who give 20 liquid measures of wine, 15 who give 15 liquid measures of wine, and 13 who pay with wine. They are to proceed with their ploughs to Mainz, Worms or Frankfurt, are to pay ‘barefrida’ in those places or go to them. In harvest time they are to work 1 day, make 100 axilia, 6 cartloads of wood, send 1 man for grape-gathering. Apart from these 13 there are 8 who pay 5 liquid measures of wine , provide 2 cartloads of wood, and provide service for 3 days a week, and in Winter make the lord’s wine, and provide service 4 days a week in harvest time. All 21 [i.e. the 13 and the 8] are to provide service for 14 days in Winter or give 9 denarii, and twice a year they are to proceed [to the monastery] with their plough. 5 chickens, 15 eggs. For the service of the king pro pice they are to give 1 uncia or 1 plough. In Autumn they are to plough 3 iurnales and scatter their own seeds in 1 iurnale; in Spring they are to plough 2 iurnales. When there will not be fattening in Winter, 2 pigs are to be suckled. 2 cows with ½ a plough and 1 man are to be given for the army. They are to proceed with boats whenever they are to be, and to improve and to build the building of the manor, and they are to collect up all of the hay. And from 1 home of 1 man 5 liquid measures of wine, 5 chickens and 15 eggs; at harvest time he is to serve for 3 days with his horse. The others also pay [5 liquid measures of] wine, 5 chickens, 15 eggs, serve 3 days at harvest time, and are to proceed with boats to their [local] trading port [vicus]. A third [group] pay 3 chickens, 7 eggs, 2 unciae in denarii, send 1 man to help with grape-gathering at harvest time, and proceed to their [local] trading port. 4 pay 1 tribute of suckling pig. The 1 half-a-farmstead pays 10 liquid measures of wine and provides ½ service, is to prepare bread and beer, and to Dienheim and to Wulvinesheim for 1 curtile 18 iurnales of the manor, to make wine in those places, and from the wine give 10 liquid measures.
19 Grötzingen
19.1 In Grötzingen there are 700 iurnales of the manor, 20 cartloads of wine, 150 meadows, and 26½ farmsteads.
19.2 Each must give 1 fattened pig, and at Easter make a tribute of 1 suckling pig, 5 chickens and 15 eggs; 20 farmsteads must each pay 1 measure of crops and straw/oats; 7 others 10 measures of rye and 7 of straw/oats. In Winter they must give a fortnight’s service or pay 7 denarii, and in May they must give a fortnight’s service in order to have the lord’s pittura, and in Spring they must give 1 day’s service per week in the vineyard. Between Autumn and Spring from 27 men each must plough 12 iurnales, and collect up grain and hay. 4 cows are to be given for the army with 1 plough and 3 men, for the service of the king and abbot they are to pay ‘barefrida’, and make legation under the abbot. Apart from these 27 there are 8 who provide 3½ cartloads of wine. The wives work to make linen cloth of 10 cubits and some as may be necessary. They are to make 5 fences and 5 for the building of the manor.
20 Bruschal
20.1 In Bruschal there are 410 iurnales of the manor, 9 cartloads of wine, 50 meadows, and 20 farmsteads.
20.2 Each farmstead serves 3 days a week. From these there are 15 who pay 15 liquid measures of beer, 5 chickens and 15 eggs. 5 others pay 20 liquid measures of beer, 3 chickens and 15 eggs. In Autumn they are to plough 4 iurnales and 3 in Spring. Twice a year they are to proceed [to the monastery] with their ploughs and 1 man. Apart from this there are 3 pay 7½ liquid measures of beer, and in 1 year they pay 2 chickens and the next year they pay 3 chickens, 15 eggs, and give service like those mentioned above. Their wives work to make linen cloth of 10 cubits. They are to make fences for the building of the manor, and to collect up grain and hay.
21 Öwisheim
21.1 In Öwisheim there are 278 iurnales of the manor, 20 meadows and 8 farmsteads. Each farmstead gives 1 fattened pig, 1 cartload of beer, 1 measure of wheat, 5 chickens and 15 eggs. In Autumn they are to plough 3 iurnales and like wise [3] in Spring. They are also to pay 5 cartloads of wood. In Winter they are to provide a fortnight’s service, and likewise [a fortnight’s service] in Spring. Apart from these 4, 5 others who each likewise owe 3 days service per week, pay 15 liquid measures of beer, 1 measure of wheat, and at Easter pay 5 denarii, 3 chickens and 15 eggs. In each week of Autumn they are to plough 1 iurnale, and likewise [they are to plough 1 iurnale] in Spring. Everyone is to proceed with their plough [to the monastery] twice a year. The wives are to pay 1 solidus. They are to collect grain and hay. They are to make fences for the building of the manor. They are to prepare bread and beer every year.
22 Derdingen
22.1 In Derdingen there are 190 iurnales of the manner, 20 meadows, and 14 farmsteads.
22.2 They produce 14 linen cloths. And whenever they plough half, they are to plough [the land of] the manorial curtile. Each week they are to provide service for 3 days. They are to pay 1 cow for the army. Twice a year each man is to proceed [to the monastery] with his plough, and he is to prepare white grain and bread.
23 Zaisenhausen
23.1 In Zaisenhausen there are 446 iurnales of the manner, 33 meadows, and 23 farmsteads.
23.2 They produce 23 linen cloths, 10x4 cubits. On arable land each farmstead must plough 1 iurnale a week. They give 2 cows for the army. Each week they give 3 days service. 19 farmsteads provide 20 liquid measures of beer. Twice a year they proceed with their plough to the monastery.
24 Witegowenhusen
24.1 In Witegowenhusen there are 320 iurnales of the manner, 30 meadows, [and 11 farmsteads].
24.2 Each provides service for 3 days a week, and whenever they plough half they are to plough [the land of] the manorial curtile. Each is to pay 15 liquid measures of beer. At Easter 9 of them each pay 1 tribute of suckling pig, plus 2 chickens. Each is to prepare bread and white grain by order. Twice a year each must take their plough [to the monastery]. They produce 11 linen cloths 8x3 cubits.
25 Renningen
25.1 In Renningen there are 240 iurnales, 20 meadows, 22 standard-sized farmsteads and ½ farmstead.
25.2 Each week each farmstead provides 3 [days] service. 2 farmsteads provide 20 liquid measures of beer and the other [20] provide 15. At Easter each makes a tribute of 1 suckling pig, 3 chickens, and 15 eggs. Twice a year they proceed to the monastery with their plough. Each owes 1 measure of grain; likewise [1 measure] of rye. They are to plough 3 iurnales, provide watch by order, provide white grain and bread. They give 4 cows for the army with 1 plough and 2 men. Their wives make 10x4 linen cloth from the lord’s flax.
