Old English glosses to Herbarium of Pseudo-Apuleius and Medicina de quadrupedibus

Summary:

Main text of the manuscript is a s. xi2 illustrated copy of the herbal of Ps.-Apuleius and of the Medicina de quadrupedibus. Eight of the plants illustrated were annotated with their Old English names, and two lemma in the Medicina were glossed in English, at roughly the same time as the writing of the main text, but in a different hand. Ker notes that ‘other English names were added [to the herbal] later (s. xiii)’, and that the manuscript has a Bury St. Edmunds ex-libris on fol. 1r (1957, p. 357). Glosses ‘nearly contemporary with the main text’ (Ker 1957, p. 357).
