Summary:

The manuscript contains a collection of Ælfric's homilies and saints' lives. It also includes penitential material: three anonymous texts and a translation of Alcuin's De uirtutibus et uitiis, chapters 1-13. Several items have interlineata and marginalia in English, Latin and French.

The manuscript is in good condition. The vellum has holes on fols 117, 118, 171, 173, 225 and 226 (repaired with a rounded vellum patch) and sewing on fols 8, 16, 38, 80, 204, 205.

Script: English Vernacular Minuscule
Description: This scribe copied fols 2-36v, 120v-227v. The scribe uses a type of English vernacular minuscule characteristic of the mid to second half of the twelfth-century. The aspect is slightly backward-leaning; the ascenders are slightly wedged. The descenders are either tapered or curve on the left. The hand does not extend too much either below or above the ruled line. The nib of the pen is cut in a squarish proportion to give to the script a squarish aspect. The scribe mixes both Caroline and insular features.
Summary of the characteristics of the hand:
æ is formed by an insular a and an e, which sits on shoulder of the a and terminates with protruding tongue on the right. At times, it sits on a protruding headstroke of the a.
Caroline a with a small lobe, which is not always closed, and pronounced head with a broken stroke of squarish proportion.
A diamond-shaped lobe of the b alternates with a more rounded bowl. Wedged straight ascender whose end turns slightly to the left.
c is slightly fractured, and starts with a thicker, dot-like onset stroke.
d has a thick left-leaning back, occasionally tapered backward to the right, and a small rounded lobe; its head can also be of squarish proportions and the length of the ascender varies.
Small closed e with a short tongue to the right of the squarish head.
Three forms of f: a Caroline f, sitting on the line with a tall ascender which occasionally curls onto itself with a closed stroke; a tailed f, with a long descender finishing with a long leftwards tail; and an insular form of f with a tapered descender and a wedged ascender.
There are three forms of g: a Caroline g with a rounded upper lobe which has a small protrusion to the right, and a lower lobe which does not always close. The descender curves in a rounded, 90 degree angle to the left, stopping just past the line of the starting point of the lobe; an insular form of g, with an s-shaped descender curving towards the right just after the writing line, and an open lobe on the right finished by horizontal stroke; a long and thin insular g with a tail curling towards the right and a flat head stroke.
Caroline h has thick, wedged ascender and a right limb which sometimes curls under the line.
minims are traced singularly, irregular in shape and their feet either finish with a small serif or with a sharper angle to the right.
l has a shaft finishing on the line with a small foot curling to the right.
Rounded, closed o.
p has a descender finishing with a right curl and a closed, squarish lobe which closes past the shaft on the left.
Insular r has a well defined bow and a descender which curves on the left. Caroline and long tailed r also appear.
Caroline s has a flat head-stroke; it alternates with long s and an insular form with a tailed descender curving to the left.
t has a straight head.
þ has a pointed lobe and a wedged ascender.
ð can be formed by a back stroke 45 degree ascender finishing with a serif curving on the right.
x has an exaggerated descender curving right.
y is always dotted and the descender ends with a flick to the right.
ƿ is formed with a tailed descender generally curving towards the left and a closed elongated lobe.
Two-stroke D has a upright stem and a wide lobe closing at the top in a narrow parallel stroke to the stem.
Abbreviations:
þ is crossed through for 'þæt'
A macron usually abbreviates m, n
i and -er are abbreviated with macrons, apostrophe or a suprascript virgule.
Litterae Notabiliores: Pen ink work is occasionally used to decorate Litterae Notabiliores and in particular the descender of g and þ may develop in ornate leaves or floral motifs.
Punctuation: Punctus on the line and Punctus elevatus. Capitals are often, but not regularly, used after the punctus.
Ligatures: Use of de ligatures in the English, Latin and French texts and the st ligature in which the headstroke of the s curves and forms the shaft of the t.
Language: The scribe uses a greater number of twelfth-century spellings than Scribe 2, departing from West Saxon features (Crawford 1922, pp. 429-36; Pope 1967, pp. 38-39; Rosier 1964, pp. 8-11)

Description: This scribe copied fols 53r-120v. The scribe uses a type of English vernacular minuscule characteristic of the mid second half of the twelfth-century. The aspect is upright and fractured; the ascenders are slightly wedged. The descenders occasionally taper to the left. The hand extends below or above the ruled line in a proportionate way. This scribe mixes Caroline and insular letter forms.
Summary of the characteristics of the hand:
æ is formed by a Caroline a and an e which sits on its protruding headstroke and terminates with a tail on the top right.
Caroline a has a small lobe and a pronounced hook.
b has a rounded lobe and a wedged, straight ascender
c is one broken stroke; Caroline.
d has a thick, almost upright, back stroke which curves to the right and a small, rounded lobe.
e is small and closed, with a little tongue on the right side of the head, more evident in final position.
f is Caroline, with the shaft sitting on the line with a wedged foot.
The scribe uses an insular form of g with a flat head and a well-formed descender which curls towards the left almost into a closed loop. Occasionally the closing is complete, especially when this letter appears in combination with a and minims.
h has a wedged ascender and wedged feet.
minims are traced singularly, regular in shape and with pronounced feet.
The shaft of l finishes on the line with a small foot curling to the right.
o is rounded and closed.
p has a tapered descender and a closed lobe of squarish proportions which closes past the shaft on the left.
r is insular with a well defined bow and a descender which curves to the left.
s has a curved head-stroke and well defined feet.
t has a straight head stroke and straight shaft with a foot curling to the right.
y is always dotted and the descender curves to the left.
ƿ is formed with a thick tailed descender generally curving towards the left and a closed elongated lobe.
þ has a pointed lobe, wedged ascender and tailed descender occasionally pointing to the left.
ð is formed by a 45 degree ascender and a median thick stroke across the back stroke and terminates with a serif curving to the right and/or left.
Litterae Notabiliores: Pen-ink work is regularly used to decorate Litterae Notabiliores and in particular the descender of any letter forms, including the paraph mark.
Abbreviations: Abbreviations are not used regularly, a part from the use of tironian nota. Occasional use of crossed through þ for 'þæt' and rare use of macrons.
Punctuation: Punctus and paraph marks are used. Capitals are used, but not regularly, after the punctus.
Ligatures: No ligature, but interesting use of biting of letter forms in conjunction with insular g.
Language: The scribe uses a number of twelfth-century spellings. (Crawford 1922, pp. 429-36; Pope 1967, pp. 38-39; Rosier 1964, pp. 8-11)

Additions:

Latin annotation: ' [Hoc uolumen] (unclear: trimming) continet multam copiam sermonum in anglico. | non appreciatum propter ydioma incognitum.' This appears on fol. 29r on the top margin above Ælfric's Catholic Homilies, First Series, II, Christmas Day. A similar marginalia in Durham, Cathedral Library, B. III. 32, fol. 2r (see Mynors 1939, n. 22; plate 15). Datable to xiii/xiv (see Ker 1957, p. 23; Traxel 2004, pp. 131-34).

Archbishop Parker's table of contents appears on fol. 1r and J. M. Kemble's description is included on fols iii-iv.

The manuscript contains annotations in English and Latin in fourteenth-century hands on fols 37-42. A sixteenth-century hand wrote on fol. 2: 'Genesis in Englishe. Matthæus Cantuar: dedit 1574'. This is the same hand which added the note about the pagination. Later hands, possibly sixteenth-century, annotate fols 2v-8r, fols 162r-68v and fols 175v-78v, adding also some comments in Greek.

History:

Origin:

Treharne suggests a South-Eastern origin, probably Christ Church, Canterbury or Rochester (Treharne 1998, pp. 240-44). Schipper argues that part of the manuscript was copied in the cathedral-priory of St Æthelthryth and St Peter in Ely. This argument is based on the presence, in the manuscript, of this homily, which could have constituted the central starting point for the process of copying (Schipper 1983, pp. 291-92). Traxel does not offer a conclusive argument on the history of the manuscript. However, he suggests a possible compilation originally from St Augustine's Canterbury and then Ely (Traxel 2004, p. 207). Richards’ review of Traxel re-proposes a possible Rochester provenance (Richards 2007). Frankis 2007 proposes a connection with the priory of Barnwell, an house of Augustinian canons which was dedicated to St Giles.

Provenance:

It is possible that the manuscript was at Ely in virtue of the evidence on fol. 25r. The manuscript was amongst the collection of Matthew Parker (James 1912, p. xxxvii, n. 17, see also Ker 1957, p. 23). It is not clear how the manuscript came into the possession of Parker. However, it may be possible that he found Ii. 1. 33 at Ely during his residence there. On 10 September 1541, Ely was re-founded with a new chapter, a dean and eight canons ('Ely Introduction') and Parker was 'among the first canons of the new foundation'. Other manuscripts now in Corpus Christi College Cambridge came into Parker's possession while he was at Ely (CCCC 44, 335, 393 and 416, see Owen 1973, p. 4).

Acquisition:

Donated to Cambridge University Library in 1574 by Matthew Parker together with other manuscripts containing Old English texts: Ii. 2 .4; Ii. 2. 11; Ii. 4. 6; Kk. 3. 18 and Hh. 1. 10. At a similar time Parker gave also Ff. 1. 23 and Gg. 3. 28 (Oates 1986, pp. 97-101). Possibly under the influence of Andrew Perne, master of Peterhouse in 1554 and dean of Ely in 1557, who was restoring the University Library in 1574 (see also, Wright 1949-53, p. 224).
