Homilies and lives of saints

Date: s. xii2

Summary:

The manuscript contains a collection of Ælfric's homilies and saints' lives. It also includes penitential material: three anonymous texts and a translation of Alcuin's De uirtutibus et uitiis, chapters 1-13. Several items have interlineata and marginalia in English, Latin and French.

Manuscript Items:

  1. Item: Fols 2r-24v/8

Title (B.8.1.1): HeptateuchÆlfric's preface to Genesis and his translation of Chapters I-XXIV.22.

Incipit: 'Ælfric munuc gret æþelƿeard ealdorman eadmod | lice.'

Explicit: 'sealde hyre éarpreo | nas eallgildene sona; gildene biagas god herIENDE.'

      Text Language: English

Other versions of the text: Almost identical to the versions in Claudius B. iv and Laud Misc. 509. However, according to Crawford 1922, Chapters iv, v, xi, xxiii and xxiv offer an independent translation of the Vulgate and vary from the versions in these two manuscripts. Crawford edited these versions in parallel columns (see Crawford 1922, p. 5).
