Collection history

The creation of a collection of compilation tapes, of edited extracts of oral history interviews from the main collection, was part of the work of the Leicester Oral History Archive project. These compilations form a series of 49 recordings on a variety of themes, which were originally on sale to the public. This sub collection of the Leicester Oral History Archive collection has been entitled The Leicester Oral History Archive compilation collection.

What the collection contains

The series of compilation recordings comprising a wide range of named topics, encapsulating life during the early 20th century. Aspects covered include views of different districts of Leicester and some of the villages of Leicestershire. Leicester shops and market, trams, railways, theatre and music hall are some of the themes covered. Others include industry and agriculture, personal experience of employment, unemployment, aspects of wartime life, education, politics and holidays. These accessible extracts provide a useful introduction to the main collection as well as being a useful place to start general oral history research. The main Leicester Oral History Archive collection expands on these themes and contains many others.
