24 September 2010

Dr Marcus Cooke, Senior Lecturer, has been awarded the 6th Catherine Pasquier Award (2010) by the Society for Free Radical Research (Europe).

The Award is given annually in memory of Prof. Catherine Pasquier of INSERM, Paris. She was an international leader in the field of free radical biology and served as President of the Society for Free Radical Research (SFRR) Europe 2001-2002.

Commenting on his accolade Dr Cooke said “I am honoured to receive this prestigious award. It means a lot to have one's work recognised - and for this recognition to be from some of the leaders in Free Radical Research, could not be better. I share this award with the rest of the team who all work so hard - I think it is something that we can all be proud of."

Professor Bartosz, President Elect of the Society for Free Radical Research (Europe)said “The award is granted to Dr. Marcus Cooke in recognition of his research achievements, especially in the field of formation and repair of oxidative damage of DNA. Dr Cooke, when nominated for the award, was an author of 73 publications, his papers were cited more than 1200 times and his Hirsch index was 18. In the name of the Society for Free Radical Research-Europe, I wish him further scientific achievements and hope that the award will be a stimulus and help in his career”

The Catherine Pasquier award is presented to a young scientist who have made some accomplishments within his or her career and shows future promise. The award recipient also has achievements in the broad area of free radical research. As part of the Award, Dr Cooke delivered the prestigious Catherine Pasquier Lecture at the annual meeting of SFRR Europe, in Oslo, Norway, 12-15 September, 2010. This year the meeting was held jointly with the European Environmental Mutagen Society who awarded Dr Cooke their Young Scientist award in 2003.

Dr. Cooke has recently been elected to the Committee of the Society for Free Radical Research (Europe).
