Dr Tony Baxter

Notice | Obituary

We have learnt, with regret, of the death of Dr Tony Baxter on 21st September 2011.

Tony completed a BA at Cambridge in Mechanical Engineering, followed by a PhD at the University of Warwick in 1967, and was appointed as a lecturer in 1970, in the general field of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics. In the 1980’s, he developed an interest in digital electronics, micro-computing, computer-aided design and the application of on-line computation to experimental data collection; this was very much ahead of its time. He also wrote a word processor to run on BBC microcomputers that was widely used in the department well before such software was widely available. He took early retirement in September 1990, after which he held an Associate Teacher contract, based on a one-third commitment of time, to September 1993. He remained an active member of a group called LUEDS (Leicester University Engineering Department Staff).

His interests included Caravanning, and he was an active member of the Photographic Group of the Camping and Caravanning Club of GB.

He leaves a wife, Hazel; a daughter, three sons and grandchildren.

There will be a private Cremation followed by a Service of Thanksgiving at St. Wilfrid's Church, Kibworth on Friday 30th September at 12 noon. No flowers by request. Donations if desired for St. Wilfrid's Church (cheques payable to Kibworth PCC) may be sent to Michael Pearce, 7 Springfield Crescent, Kibworth, Leics LE8 0LJ.
