Triple whammy for Leicester team

Team of students from the University of Leicester triumph in winning three awards at national enterprise competition

Issued 28 April

Students from the University of Leicester are celebrating after achieving three awards at a national enterprise and business competition in London on Thursday 22 April.

University teams from across the country compete each year at the Students in Free Enterprise National Competition (SIFE UK) and this year the Leicester team have returned victorious. SIFE UK promotes entrepreneurship amongst students in the UK, and the annual competition offers student teams the opportunity to showcase their projects to board of over 50 business professionals. The SIFE UK’s Mission is ‘A head for business…A heart for the world…’, as many the projects work to transfer business knowledge, personal success, business ethics and environmental sustainability.

The Leicester team won three separate accolades for their projects, which they presented to a judging panel of business experts at the competition at Canary Wharf, London. The awards were:

  • Business Ethics Award winning £200 (for principled and exemplary decision making in respect of suppliers to the 'Farmers Market’ they run working together the environmental team).
  • Semi Finalist in the opening round of the competition.
  • Semi-Final runners-up to the overall winners.

This is only the second year a team from Leicester has gone to the SIFE National Competition, and they have already made their mark. In 2009, the SIFE Leicester team won the ‘Spirit of Enterprise Award’, and with their successes this year the team continues to grow from strength to strength.

Rajinder Bhuhi, who is the University Advisor for the SIFE Leicester Team, commented:

“This is a great achievement as 39 universities compete in the competition and within each league there are teams which have been running for 8-9 years developing their projects. The achievement is all the more impressive as our young team has only been running for 18 months.

“The SIFE Leicester Team is looking forward to developing working on projects for the coming year and is keen to go all the way next year.”

Belal Kulasy, Co-President of the Leicester Team, said:

“Being part SIFE has given the team and I access to a world of opportunities to develop and practice our leadership and entrepreneurial skills. It is truly a fantastic and rewarding organisation to be part of!”
